Gateway's Ethos

Gateway College proudly proclaims that it is an International School in a Sri Lankan environment. The school has taken meaningful initiatives to inculcate in the minds of children, a sense of belonging and love for the nation and respect for its customs, norms and values.

An important aspect of the school’s curriculum is the learning of Sri Lankan languages. Though English is the medium of instruction, both Sinhala and Tamil are taught in the Primary School in addition to French. Thereafter, pupils have a choice of taking either Sinhala or French at OL. The History and Geography curriculum from Year 1 to 9 has a Sri Lankan component introduced such that the students learn about their own country in addition to Europe and the rest of the world. Religion is taught as a subject in the primary school.

The daily morning assembly begins with the observance of religious practices while all four major religions are celebrated annually in the form of Bhakthi Gee, Christmas Carols, Meelad celebrations and Saraswathie Pooja. Students engage themselves in a variety of charitable and social service activities throughout the year. All Gateway students are guided to pay obeisance to their parents daily according to the customs of the community they belong to. The student teacher relationship in the school is essentially friendly and the management style is firm, friendly and fair.

Chairman Mr. Alles says - We have a beautiful blend of the richest cultures – the Christian, the Buddhist, the Hindu and the Islamic. We lay emphasis on the equity of all religions and communities. Diversity is a source of richness, rather than a reason for embarrassment. There is cross pollination and adequate communication, among those who speak different languages, profess different faiths and come from different cultural backgrounds. In fact, we are an International School in a Sri Lankan environment.
